Convert household fixture to 12volt?

Hello,
DW wants more light for her beading work. She sits under a spot light with insufficient lumination.
What would it take to replace that fixture with a rewireed household fixture that would cast more light, perhaps a 12volt spot bulb of greater wattage? Failing that, could I rewire a common table lamp to 12volt?
I looked online a bit for 12volt lamps and found little. If you know a source, I can avoid this whole mess, tho I'd still like to know about 12v rewiring as part of my education on 12v.
Thanks much,

RE: Portable Waste Tank Location

Ha ha. You haven't met my wife. Ha ha ha! ;)
No, really, tho. We spend 4 - 6 winter weeks in the BLM desert of Yuma AZ. Last year we went 10 or 12 days on gray water with very conservative use and showers elsewhere. I don't like moving our FT trailer down those bumpy gravel roads any more than necessary.
Put the tank in the trailer! I can just picture her face. :M :M :M Ha ha ha!

RE: 4runner towing 23 footer?

Wheelbase specs? Read How to Tow Safely by JD Gallant, well respected RV expert and founder of the RV Consumers Group. According to Gallant, wheelbase is the most important factor for safe towing.
In the book, he includes a table of minimum wheelbase for length of trailer. Plus a reduction factor for fifth wheel trailers.
According to his table, you can safely town trailers with one ton trucks. But, for example, a one ton truck is not long enough for a 37 foot trailer.
My guess: trailer manufacturers don't spec out TV wheelbase because they are required to and don't want to take responsibilty. RV sales people and truck sales people often don't know any more about RV towing than their customers. (Don't get me started on my experience. :R)

RE: Portable Waste Tank Location

Hello Les,
I'm thinking about mounting my 40gallon blue boy under my fifth wheel like you have I don't expect to use the tank much, so would rather just stick it up there and forget about it.
How is this working out for you? I feel a bit concerned about someday scraping the tank on a low curb or driveway.
Thanks much.

Can’t share a Sprint Aircard via Internet Connection Sharing

Hello,
Looking for some suggestions on making Windows Vista Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) working. I want to share a Spint Air Card/Modem between two laptops. The Aircard works fine on each laptop.
I tried sharing the AirCard on laptop A, but Windows returned a nonspecific error each time. So I successfully shared it on laptop B. But I cannot connect to it from laptop A.
My network works fine, via Ethernet cable and wireless. Both pointed to the same network and workgroup. I can see files back and forth between the two laptops. I have turned off the Windows firewall and Norton Firewall and Intrusion Control, as well as other misc security settings in Norton. I also turned off DHCP in my WRT54G router, so it didn't conflict with DHCP in laptop B. I set the LAN and other options in Internet Options-Connections as instructed in the Help. I also tried connecting the two laptops via a crossover Ethernet cable - NG.
Since I could not share the Aircard on laptop A, I suspect the problem lies there. But I sure can't find it. In the network window, I only see each laptop name and NIC. I only see the
Any ideas would be welcome. Otherwise I must purchase a new router that accepts this USB modem at $175.
Thanks.

RE: WY 191 or I15 to Grand Tetons?

Wel, I took 191 to 26 as advised. It was an easy drive actually, with no steep inclines, despite the elevation gain. Thanks to all who replied.

RE: Blue boy hitch handle over a trailer ball

Better a garage door opener than a Blue Boy. (Trying to stay on topic here.) :p

RE: Blue boy hitch handle over a trailer ball

A week or so after the spillage, with a new blue boy, he stopped in the middle of the dump run and slipped the shift lever into reverse just so we could watch his wife go into apoplexy when she saw the reverse lights come on.
We still chuckle over that. :)
Ha ha. :B Knowing my DW, that would be the last time she helped me with this chore.

RE: Blue boy hitch handle over a trailer ball

Thanks. I'll see how it goes. If not, I'll try Lantley's advice to wrap a bungee around it and clip to the bottom of the bumper.
Tho I'd prefer to use duct tape, cause it solves everything...and I have three rolls!

Blue boy hitch handle over a trailer ball

I just purchased a Barker Blue Boy. Hooray! So I mounted a 2” ball and hung the handle over it.
http://www.irv2.com/photopost/data/500/handleoverball.JPG
So now I’m wondering if the handle will pop up and off when I’m towing it around. Sure would hate to see it pass me by on a down hill grade. :E

RE: WY 191 or I15 to Grand Tetons?

Is 191 better than going thru Lander on 26?
OP here:
I dunno myself. For the extra 10 miles, I figured to spend more of those miles on the interstate. (I got a lot of ground to cover.)
Opinions?

WY 191 or I15 to Grand Tetons?

I’m towing west on I80 to the Tetons and Yellowstone. I see that 191 North would save me 300 miles vs. Salt Lake City and I15. Is 191 a reasonable route to tow my 5ver? Got good brakes. And 300 miles less could easily compensate for a hill or two?
After Yellowstone, can I take that road to Ashton to pick up highway 20 west?
What say you, road gurus? :B

Better performance with System-Advanced Settings

Is this an undocumented solution to improving Vista performance problems?
For months, my nine month old Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium has been going downhill. Running slower, low memory errors, can’t easily shutdown or logoff. Typical Windows degradation.
To jigger the new memory error, I opened Control Panel-System-Advanced System Settings-Advanced-Performance Settings. Then I chose Adjust for Best Performance, in place of Let Windows Choose. Which turned off all the Custom Features. Rebooted.
No difference in the memory errors, so I opened the same program and went back to Let Windows Choose. Rebooted.
Bam, my system works like new. All the above mentioned problems have disappeared! Tried the same fix on my wife’s older Visa Home Premium laptop. She says it runs better too!!
Is this common knowledge or have I stumbled onto something here?

RE: CGs and sights between Phoenix and Olympia, WA

Thanks Jeannie. Last Nov, we drove down from WA, where we have a RV lot in the Cascades (Concrete). We considered Hwy 395, but people discouraged us, referring to several passes in OR that snow can cover quickly.
Are the roads OK for towing in April and May?

CGs and sights between Phoenix and Olympia, WA

Hello,
Following some time in Senator Wash LTVA and Q, we moved into Black Canyon City, north of Phoenix, for a little knee slicing. We hope to return to the road by early or mid-April.
We figure to head north to Flagstaff, then we dunno. Final destination for this purpose is Olympia, WA.
We like boondocking or utility camping in public or private parks, with the emphasis on nature and small towns. Not cities, tho we could go to cities for worthwhile attractions. We prefer to stay a week or so, drive 150 miles between. We travel in a 35' (exterior length) 5ver.
Anybody have some suggestions on stops between here and there?
Thanks much.

RE: Washington State Residency Requirements

I am not sure why you want to continue to be a Washington State resident. Why don't you consider becoming a resident of a state that is much more tax friendly? I chose South Dakota and have saved tons of $$ with very low insurance rates, 3% sales tax on vehicle purchases, no income tax, and low vehicle registration. Call Paul at Alternative Resources 800-477-2664.
The Real ID Act implementation will be postponed many times I am sure.
Washington has no income tax. Has low registration vehicle fees. Does have sales tax upwards to 8% and more.
And sales tax ain't an issue if you don't stay there.

RE: The Electrician said “oops”

My surge protector has been clicking on and off for two weeks now due to high voltage in our park. Up to 137 volts, according to the display. Betcha that's too high for the flashing gizmos in my trailer, including my laptop and TV.
Shouldn't bug your laptop. They are designed to be used anywhere in the world. The voltage in most of the rest of the world is 240V and it's 250V in China. 137 is no big deal to the adapter.
Thanks. Well, I fixed the problem. Got rid of my TV, and moved my trailer to Arizona. :B

RE: ICS error 1068 Dependency service or group failed to start

Kewl, thanks for finding this.
Good news: I enabled Telephony and the error disappeared.
Bad news: new less helpful error now an error occured while internet connection sharing was being enabled (null). I went back to basics with an ethernet cable from my laptop to my router. Still get that error.
